25 years ago, one record changed the course of dance music, 'On & On' by Jesse Saunders is regarded as the first House record.
With this anniversary comes an event that shouldn't be missed. A tribute to the sound we all love, by the man himself.
I can't think of one genre of music that has taken my interest as much as house music. With this in mind, the next party being thrown by LILO in JHB should be one to really go to.
We'll be there, considering it's the day after my birthday, so feel free to buy us a drink or two.

Those who are followers of us here on Deeper.co.za know we have a deep love and respect for Chris Gray's work. He's just released a new album, Vivid Sensuality, and it's available for download now.
The best part about this album is that you can download it for free, or offer a donation. You aren't supporting some fat media executive who isn't really interested in the music, you aren't financing some evil label who just sees artists as cash cows, you are supporting the artist directly, and that just makes sense.
The album can be download from here. You can donate on the same page, and whilst I understand times are a little tough, even a token gesture is often appreciated.

For those in Johannesburg this evening, I've just been told that Nick has managed to get them to spin a few of our mixes on the air at 7pm.
Big thanks goes out to Nick and of course UJFM.
Much love!

New year and new Lilo!
Tired of the usual sound that's being thrown around the place in Joey's?
Get down to Systematic Session on Friday 13th and hear resident Deeper.co.za, Nick C, lay down some seriously good tracks.
Let's make no mistake, the line-up and quality of the evening that Lilo gives, is second to none out there!

Hey all,
We are still alive, just busier than ever. New mixes from myself and Nick will be done in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned!

So those who frequent this site, know I have a deep passion for the older house/disco sound. With that in mind, turns out Spirit of House helps that addiction with some amazing mixes. Thanks!!

I guess this interview I did for Bodytonic late last year, really resonates the message about how great this country is.
Stop with this Xenophobic shit, ffsake people, it's old and very damn boring to attack others on the basis of colour.
This country has so much going for it, people just need to stop acting like it's the 15th century.

There's a doctor in the house this friday at Fuel Cafe, and he's insisting that y'all take some beat-medication to help make you move.
Nick will be throwing down the shizzle, so stop pretending you have a better place to go, and turn up and say "allo boyo!"
// Posted by Daniel at 11:44 AM | Comments (0)
We are back!!!
Right so anyone in JHB this friday, get your ass down to Fuel Cafe and see Nick C and Peter do their thang. Seriously there isn't ANY other place in SA you can hear this shit, nuff said!.

Justin Ouellette who not only is a fantastic photographer but also talented developer, has created a pretty cool site called Muxtape.
For those old enough to remember the glory days of mix tapes, this is the digital equivalent.
Anyway, whilst it's there and something fresh, check out my mix tape (which will change as and when the mood takes me)
So anyone out there fancy creating one and sharing the link?
// Posted by Daniel at 10:01 PM | Comments (0)
Here at Deeper.co.za, we have many friends out there who share the love of the music. The latest addition to the family, one which I was personally as happy a pig in the proverbial at the birth of was FriskyRecords. Well done Faisal, hope it goes well mate!
// Posted by Daniel at 08:03 PM | Comments (0)
Oh what a night in store......
So Static P and Mr White are no strangers to the SA house scene, so having them both spin at Lilo (fuel cafe) is damn impressive.
Stop any plans, get your ass down to the place and shake it like your uncle at a wedding party.
Enuff said, DO IT!

So it seems we have been having issues with Feedburner and our feeds. I decided to drop them and just use the ones on the site.
Would you mind updating your RSS readers/bookmarks so that they use:
Thanks!

We don't run this site for any commercial gain. There are no ads, no company paying for the hosting costs, it's all done out of a pure love the music. So with this I have to say a MASSIVE thank you to Guillaume Bouger for his donation. It means alot to hear from you all about the site and the music.
Watch this space, bigger things to come in 2008!

The aim of this site was, and always will be, to create a focal point for house music in Africa. We rely heavily on you all to give us feedback on the mixes, the site and also ideas of where to go next, so now it's your turn to tell us what you would like to see.
It would really help us if you gave your insight in how this site could be made better. The area's I'd like comments on are:
- Mix frequency and guest mixes.
How often do you think we should try and post mixes? What have you thought with the recent guest mixes that have appeared? Who do you think should have a guest mix here?
- Mix formats.
Currently we offer 128k mp3 mixes and RealAudio mixes. Is everyone happy to get rid of the RealAudio format? What other formats would you prefer?
- Podcasts.
Do you want them?
- Site Design.
This is one area which I want to sort out. We need to update the site ASAP, so what would you like to see?
- Pushing the community.
How do you feel we can do more for the community in South Africa?
I know loads of you visit this site, so it would be great if you could add your thoughts and help make this site even better.

As some of you may know, I am moving back to SA in Nov, and will be based in Umhlanda, Durban. I want to be spinning more than ever and it's given me a big boost when I see that the local scene is still as active ever.
This mix was introduced to me by Matthew (hat tip sir!) and was mixed by DJ M.
The mix made exclusively for Horizon Deep by Michael
Haupt and mastered by Kris Verex (Subground FM, Highwood Audio).
1-Sterling Ensemble 'Believe' Ricanstruction
2-Matthew Bandy 'My Love Is You' Vista
3-Harley & Muscle 'Seven' Little Angel
4-Kwamey & Franck Boissy 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' Chez
5-Schmoov! 'Taking Me Over' Winding Road
6-Holmes Feat. Dragonfly 'Blue Skies (Sueno Soul Vocal)' Deeplay
7-Kemdi 'Still A Dancer (Alix Alvarez Remix)' Coco Soul
8-Sam & Gigi 'Bau Au (Marcus Enochson Remix)' Still
9-Fish Go Deep 'Cure & The Cause' Go Deep
10-The Moves Feat. Tortured Soul 'See You More (Halo & Martino Remix)' Coco Soul
11-Peach Music Feat. Sunny Larican 'Always (Ben Tom's Bayside Mix)' Peach
12-Uptown Tones 'Andrew's Jam' Seasons
Overall a good mix and a sign that the local SA community is still as into house music as it was when i left all those years ago :)

I'm opening up the site to any DJ who is willing to create a 90's based house mix. I'm talking all those amazing tracks released ONLY in the 90's, you make it, we play it.
The idea behind this is creating the archive of the quintessential sound that made house so popular.
Interested?
Update
Wow the sheer amount of feedback has been overwhelming!
I am currently working out the best option of archiving it and getting it sorted, so will keep you updated. Keep it coming though, I know there is more out there

Makes me sad to post this, but one hell of a DJ and one of the fathers of house music passed away last month. Bruce lived a loving life and lived for this music. He wanted nothing in life but to share this music with the people. He believed that this music was a gateway to peace, happiness and fullness of spirit and above all a strong voice of God.

DJ Bruce Wayback (Bruce Bryce Wayman) July 29, 1959 to March 31, 2007.
Brad Peterson and I have decided to create a memorial site that keeps his music out there, especially for the people who love and live house music.
We have put 3 mixes online already and we have word that 40 mix tapes are still out there, we will do our best to get them uploaded.
Rest in peace Bruce, here's hoping you are still spinning those tunes wherever you are

Always wanted to have a guest mix appear on this site?, well now's your chance. This is an open call to all South African DJ's who want to have a unique mix featured on this site.
The rules are pretty simple:
1: You have to be based in South Africa (or Africa for that matter)
2: The mix needs to be unique and not posted anywhere else
3: It should fit in with the theme of things, but we are open to new stuff
Think you can produce something that will be listened to by over 40 000 visitors a month?
Drop me a mail and tell me what you have.

This has to be the finest deep house/electro event currently available in JHB (and i'd go so far as saying SA), so head on down and see Nick spin his usual slot and also hear other brilliant dj's doing their thang!

You heard it right, We are finally back to spinning together, in the same damn city where it all started back in '89!
Catch us in Johannesburg at the Fuel Cafe (corner quinn & carr str) this friday, the 15th Dec.
DJ's lineup is:
Troye
Static Plastic
Nick and some bloke named Daniel
![]()
And JHBLive did a write-up about us. Would be cool to see the SA peeps down there, even if you just show us some love for a hour or so!
// Posted by Daniel at 10:21 AM | Comments (0)
Oh we are still alive, just stupid busy with normal life!
Today I hit 30, which is always a interesting age to reach. I will be spinning with Nick in JHB on the 15th Dec (venue to be announced) and both Nick and I will be making a few mixes for the site, which will be published in 2007.
We both know that there hasn't been a mix from us in a while, Nick has been creating his studio (which is currently a building yard still) and I'm still in Thailand with no decks/vinyl.
Saying that, we are still on the lookout for good homegrown talent, so if you have a mix that you want us to hear, GET IN TOUCH....
Anyway till the 15th!
// Posted by Daniel at 05:11 AM | Comments (5)
And there we were thinking no-one loved us!
The comments are back now, so please let us know you are still with us :0)

Most of you who visit this site know, and love, the late 80's and 90's house sound. The sound that got me, and Nick, started back in the late 80's is still as fresh to me as ever before. The problem is that not many mixes are being made with the sounds from that golden era, and here is where the House Archive Project comes in.
So what are we proposing?
If you have the ability to make a mix, or currently have any 90's house mixes online, drop me a mail and I'll add them to the page. Furthermore if your willing to make a custom mix with some tracks from the late 80's -> 90's, i'll happily make it a official deeper.co.za mix.
Seriously this is a great project and something that will keep the sound alive for future generations.
// Posted by Daniel at 07:52 AM | Comments (1)
oops, didn't notice that one breaking!
Thanks to Marc for pointing out our feeds had gone awol. I've fixed them and decided to move over to Feedburner, as they allow us to see how you lot use them.
New feeds are here,if you could all update your bookmarks, that would be Supah!!
// Posted by Daniel at 12:09 PM | Comments (0)
Get in touch if you can. I would like to do a mix with only locally produced music and talent. The rest of the world needs to hear what sounds are coming out of Southern Afrika (or other parts of Afrika to be honest).
If you have a track that you would be willing to have mixed, use the contact page and send me some love.
Also if anyone has any recommendations on artists we should be checking out, do the same!
Update
I've had to close comments due to excessive spam. Drop me a mail using the contact page if you want to have your track included in the next mix
// Posted by Daniel at 09:23 AM | Comments (3)
Here at Deeper, we listen to a fair chunk of mixes and not all make us wanna do the chair groove like this did.
Anything from Mr Trent's posse is good, but this just sets another level.
Jill Scott - Not Like Crazy (Q. Harris Mix) has to be one of my tracks of the year.

Yup, tired of the endless sunshine that the UK offers, I'm making a move to Thailand (Bangkok) from tomorrow morning.
Mixes will still happen and I hope to find some places to spin in Bangkok, but give me a while to get settled and i'll get back to posting the next mix,
Till then...

Catch Nick & Ace party promoters LILO setting winter ablaze with a new series of events at Newtown's Fuel Café.
Beginning in May, these Friday night events - called Around the House and dubbed 'a new series where we will be playing music for the people' - are definitely destined to make a serious impact on a relatively static Johannesburg nightlife scene that's occasionally peppered with high pointsbut that's certainly lacking a regular and reliable night.
LILO will be invading the Fuel Café on Friday evenings from 9pm 'til 2 am, with residents Static Plastic and Nick C (alongside guest DJs) keeping the dirty, raunchy house grooves rolling. The music will be slanted towards old school house and garage - a sexier side of the house music soundtrack that rules this city.

It's not often I rave about an album as much as I have with this one.
José González's Veneer album is just amazing.
I urge everyone to go out and buy it!
It's refreshing to hear some real musical talent amongst the manufactured corporate pop sound thats around today.

I'm not going to ask again to be honest...
If people decide to ruin it for others and try and PULL every f**king mix we have on this site, in one go, then i'll just pull the plug for good.
I don't see any donations for bandwidth, but greedy people from 161.53.243.90 (Croatia) seem to think they can act like a fat kid in a sweet shop. Please just download 1 mix at any given time and think of others also trying to enjoy the music
:update:
we really appreciate all the support and are currently working on way to accept donations.
Thanks again!

This site costs money, a lot of money to keep alive. We dont do it to make money, or to rip of the artists who make the tracks we play. We do it as house is dying and hardly anyone is playing the music anymore.
Where else can you hear the older tracks being spun? Where else do you hear songs which have been forgotten by the large labels and distrubution sites?
I received this email from a man i totally respected, Ed "The Red" from Bottom Line Records:
Hi
I noticed that you are allowing downloads of mixes that include my copyrighted music:(http://deeper.co.za/mixes/that_sound.html my songs are "the sound of redness" and "brooklyn underground"). I really don't appreciate people giving my music away for free after I spent a lot of time and money making it, manufacturing and marketing it. I and a lot of other producers stopped producing house music, because it became impossible to make a living at it because of this piracy. But I'm still the legal copyright owner of these tracks and I request that you stop letting people download my music.
Ed "the Red" Goltsman
edthered90@hotmail.com
Bottom Line Records
This couldnt be further from the truth.
I'm taking the site down for a while to think about where we are going. House is struggling at the moment and with people like Ed who see the Internet as a threat to a already dying genre, im not sure if i want to be part of that.
Daniel..

And with keeping up with the tech, Deeper.co.za now has a podcast feed! (ok you can stop the clapping now!)
If your unsure of what a podcast is, check out Apple's page on the subject.
You can grab our feed from here.
Once i get the chance, and depending on how this affects bandwidth, i'll update the feed to include all of the mixes we have published.
One thing we would love to know is what people think of Podcasting?
Would you like it if all mixes featured on this site, were available via iTunes?
Feedback via the comments.

Originally we had signed up to the CSS Reboot project, but May 1st has come and the site just isn't ready yet.
What i'd love to know is what everyone out there who visits and uses the site would like to see in a new design?.
Ideas in consideration are:
- added search function (including playlist entries
- faster loading times for the peeps on dialup
- downloads available via torrents to help the bandwidth issue
- section highlighting the various parties happening
All of this will naturally include a sleek design by the Finnish design god himself!
So since you all use this site, your opinion is valued.

It had to happen..

We start on the 31st July in Islington and more details will be provided before then. Also, new mix is up soon (just got back from a week in New York and feel totally refreshed.
